Dates and Date Formats
Excel stores a date as a serial number: the number of days since 1 January 1900. That makes date arithmetic simple: subtract two dates to get the days between them, add 30 to get a date a month later.
DATE(year, month, day) builds a date; YEAR, MONTH and DAY take one apart. Format the cell as a date (or use TEXT) to read it: dd/mm/yyyy, d mmm yyyy, mmmm. These lessons show the plain serial number unless you use TEXT.
