Summary Tables (Pivot Tables in Formulas)

A PivotTable in Excel summarises a list: one row per group, with totals. You can build the same table with SUMIFS, and it updates when the data changes. List each group once, then use one formula and fill it. Use $ to lock the data columns.

The PivotTable tool itself is a point-and-click feature of the Excel program. The SUMIFS method works in Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice, and teaches you what a pivot is really doing.

In this course each line of an example is one cell: the address, a colon, then what is in the cell. A line starting with = is a formula. Press Run to see the sheet with every formula worked out.

Quick check

Why lock the data ranges with $ when filling the summary formula down?

Your turn: write the code

Fill H2:H4 with the revenue (units times price) of each region. The formula for the first row is =SUMPRODUCT(($A$2:$A$6=F2)$C$2:$C$6$D$2:$D$6).

Finish the quick check (and any code exercise) to complete this lesson, or mark it done yourself.
