Types of Data
Statistics is the science of learning from data. The first question is always: what kind of data is it?
- Categorical data puts things in groups: region, colour, yes/no. Some groups have an order (small, medium, large) and some do not.
- Numerical data is a count or a measurement: age, price, temperature.
The kind of data decides which summaries make sense. You can average prices, but you cannot average colours.
