git init and git status
git init turns the current folder into a repository. git status tells you what Git sees. Use it all the time.
Before git init, Git says there is no repository. After it, readme.txt shows up under Untracked files: it exists, but Git is not following it yet.
Quick check
Which command starts tracking a project with Git?
Your turn: write the code
Start a repository, create a.txt, then print only the first line of git status (the branch line) using head -n 1.
Finish the quick check (and any code exercise) to complete this lesson, or mark it done yourself.
